Reading Time: < 1 minute

Everything about farming is challenging yet therapeutic. Behind the simple satisfaction of seeing fields of healthy crops swaying in the wind, lies the hard work of many actors. Farming is the lifeline of India and the spotlight often shines on the farmers tilling the soil, while those quietly improving the seeds of our sustenance remain unseen. Behind every bountiful harvest, countless minds are working relentlessly to improve the very essence of what we plant and consume. Among these silent guardians is Prof. Dr Ram Chet Chaudhary, a man who has devoted his life to make the dhara, golden.

The treasure among paddy crops, Kalanamak rice was once on the brink of extinction. Now it flourishes again because of Dr Chaudhary who didn’t just preserve the species, but also the heritage and flavours of Purvanchali culture.

In line with the spirit of Lal Bahadur Shastri’s call of “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,” people like Dr Chaudhary add a humble whisper: “Jai Vigyan”, victory to science. He believes that science and innovation are the keys to sustaining agriculture, the backbone of India. His research does not seek applause; it seeks to nourish a nation. For his important contributions to agriculture, he was honoured with the 2024 Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award.

Join us as we converse with Dr Chaudhary to know what drives a brilliant scholar like him to work behind the scenes of our country’s lifeblood to ensure that nutritious food is present on every table.
